Idukki is a district in the state of Kerala, India. The district was formed on 1 November 1982, when it was carved out of the then Kottayam district. Idukki has an area of 4,358 km² and a population of 1,107,604. Idukki is one of the most picturesque districts in Kerala. Idukki is also home to the world's first hydro-electric dam, the Idukki Dam. The main attraction of Idukki is the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over an area of 105 sq km. The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of animals, including elephants, leopards, tigers, sambars, gaurs, and barking deer. Idukki is also home to a large number of birds, including the Malabar grey hornbill, the Indian pitta, and the Indian peafowl.
