Indore is the largest city and commercial center of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is also the administrative headquarters of Indore district and the seat of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Located on the Malwa Plateau, at an altitude of 553 meters (1,818 ft), it is the most populous city in the state, with a population of 2,070,285 in 2011.
The city is noted for its old-world architecture and landmarks, and is known as the "heart of India" because of its geographical location in the center of the country. It is also considered the "Manchester of India" because of its industrial output.
Indore has been selected as one of the 100 Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission. It is also considered as one of the cleanest cities in India.
