Saraswati Temple

Sarda Peeth, also known as Sarasvati Peeth or Saraswati temple is a revered Hindu temple located in the village of Sharda in the Neelum Valley of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Sarasvati, the Hindu deity of knowledge, music, arts, and wisdom  and is recognized as a Shakti Peeth, symbolizing places where body parts of Sati Devi fell during her journey with Lord Shiva. It is believed that right hand of the Goddess Sati was fallen there. Sarda Peeth holds immense religious significance for Hindus, particularly Kashmiri Pandits, who consider it one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, sacred sites associated with the goddess Shakti.

Sharda Peeth is, Situated approximately 200 kilometers from Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir. 
The history of Sarda Peeth dates back to ancient times, with mentions of the temple found in Hindu scriptures and mythology. It is believed to have been established on the banks of the Neelum River by Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century philosopher and saint, as a center of learning and worship.

Architecture:

The temple complex at Sarda Peeth features traditional Kashmiri architecture. Its three-sided walls reflect the pyramidal Shikara style typical of Kashmiri architecture, while it stands elevated on a lofty platform. The entrance of the temple bear resemblance to the Greek Doric architectural style. Inside, the temple boasts intricate wood carvings, elaborate designs, and sacred motifs.

Religious Significance:

Sarda Peeth is considered a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus, attracting devotees from across the Indian subcontinent and beyond. It is believed that Goddess Sarasvati blesses her devotees with knowledge, wisdom, and academic success. The temple holds special significance during Navratri, a nine-day festival dedicated to the goddess, when elaborate rituals and ceremonies are conducted.

Cultural Heritage:

Sarda Peeth is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Kashmiri Hindu culture and heritage. The temple complex is surrounded by scenic landscapes, including lush greenery, snow-capped mountains, and the flowing waters of the Neelum River, adding to its spiritual ambiance and natural beauty.
 

 

Unfortunately, Indian devotees are unable to visit Sharda Peeth due to its location in an area controlled by Pakistan. The temple lies in the territory between Pakistan and India, approximately 130 kilometers from Srinagar and just 10 kilometers from the Line of Control (LoC). Since the partition in 1947, this region has remained deserted.

But we are hopeful that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government aims to open Sharda Peeth for devotees through Kartarpur Corridor, as stated by the Home Minister in the virtual opening of the temple.
