Kollam Thangassery is a beach town in the Kollam district of Kerala, India. It is situated around 25 kilometres from the city of Kollam, there is a lighthouse, a temple, and a fort at Thangassery. The lighthouse is open to visitors from 15 May to 15 September every year, the temple is famous for its annual festival, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of November. The fort is known as St. Thomas Fort, the beach is a popular tourist spot. Thangassery was an important port town during the medieval period. The port was frequented by Chinese and Arab traders, the St. Thomas Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1503. The fort was captured by the Dutch from the Portuguese in 1661, the Dutch occupied the fort for several years. The fort was recaptured by the Portuguese in 1665, the fort was captured by the British from the Dutch in 1795. The British occupied the fort for several years, Thangassery was an important commercial town during the British Raj. The town was the centre of the trade of spices, coffee. The town was also the centre of the Cochin Jewish community, the town was the centre of the Syrian Christian community in Kerala. The St. Thomas Fort was a centre of activity during the British Raj. The port was used by the British to export rice, pepper, coffee, tea, the town was also a major centre of the Christian missionary activity in Kerala.
