Annamalai Temple

The Annamalai Temple is located in the town of Annamalaiyur, in the Chidambaram taluk of the South Arcot district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. It is one of the five Pancha Bhoota Stalas, or temples dedicated to the five elements, air, water, earth, space and ether. The other four temples are located in Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Chidambaram and Kalahasti. The temple is said to have been built by the Pallava king Mahendravarman I in the 7th century. The temple was renovated and expanded by the Chola king Rajaraja Chola I in the 10th century. The temple has a number of shrines, with the main shrine housing a lingam, the symbol of Shiva. The temple complex covers an area of more than 150 acres.
