Pachmarhi is a town and a nagar panchayat in Hoshangabad district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the only hill station in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is located in the Satpura Range of hills, at a height of 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) above sea level. The town was developed by the British as a hill station in the late 19th century. The town is known for the Pachmarhi Cantonment, which is the only cantonment in the state. The cantonment was set up by the British in 1857. Pachmarhi is also known for the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, which was set up in 1999. The biosphere reserve is the first such reserve in Madhya Pradesh. The climate of Pachmarhi is mild and temperate. The average annual rainfall is 1,600 millimetres (63 in). The town experiences three seasons: winter, summer and monsoon. The winter season, which lasts from November to February, is mild and temperate. The summer season, which lasts from March to May, is hot and dry. The monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, is wet.
