About Shaniwar Wada
Pune Shaniwar Wada is a historical fort in Pune, Maharashtra, India. It was the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire until 1818. The fort is now in ruins, but the remaining structures are protected as a Grade I heritage site. The fort was constructed in 1732 by Bajirao I, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. It was enlarged and improved upon by his successors, including his son Balaji Baji Rao and grandson Bajirao II. The fort was the scene of the last stand of the Marathas against the British in the Third Anglo-Maratha War. Following the defeat of the Marathas, the fort was taken over by the British and was used as a military garrison. The fort was severely damaged in a fire in 1828.
