History

The city of Rome was founded on the Palatine Hill by Romulus in 753 BC. It grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Tiber River and soon became the largest city in the world. The Roman Republic was established in 509 BC, and eventually became an empire that controlled most of Europe and the Mediterranean. The Roman Empire fell in the 5th century AD, but the city of Rome continued to thrive. It was eventually conquered by the Goths in 410 AD, and by the Lombards in 753 AD. The city of Rome is now the capital of Italy.
