Dapeng Fortress is a national 4A level tourist attraction, located in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. As one of the earliest and most complete ancient military fortifications in China, it is also the largest and best preserved coastal fortress in the country. Dapeng Fortress was built in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420 AD), and was used as a coastal defense fortification against the raids of nomadic people in the north. It was later enlarged and improved in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). The fortress has a total area of about 9 square kilometers, and consists of the main fortress, two castle walls, two city gates and six small forts. The main fortress is a large, irregularly-shaped earthwork, about 1,000 meters in circumference and 10 meters in height. The two castle walls are made of earth and stone, and are about 2,000 meters and 1,500 meters in length, respectively. The two city gates are each about 30 meters in width. The six small forts are located at the corners of the main fortress and the castle walls. Dapeng Fortress is a well-preserved ancient military fortification, and is a valuable historical and cultural site.
