About Raffles Landing Site
The Singapore Raffles Landing Site is a historical landmark commemorating the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in Singapore on January 28, 1819. The site is located on the Singapore River, near the mouth of the river where it empties into the Singapore Strait. The landing site is marked by a stone monument and a plaque, which reads: "This monument marks the spot where Sir Stamford Raffles landed on the 28th of January, 1819. He came as an envoy from the British Government to open up commercial relations with the Sultan of Johore and to establish a trading post for the British East India Company." Today, the landing site is a popular tourist attraction, and is located near the Raffles Hotel, one of Singapore's most famous landmarks.
