Singapore Sri Mariamman Temple is a Hindu temple located in the heart of the city’s Chinatown district. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Mariamman, who is the guardian deity of the Tamils. The temple is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Singapore and is especially popular with Indian and Tamil visitors. The Sri Mariamman Temple was first built in 1827 by Indian immigrants who had arrived in Singapore to work in the British colonial administration. The current temple was rebuilt in 1873, and has been expanded and renovated on several occasions since then.
 
The temple complex occupies an area of over 4,000 square meters and is surrounded by a high wall. The main entrance to the temple is through a large gopuram (tower), which is decorated with elaborately carved stone statues of Hindu gods and goddesses. The temple interior is divided into a number of separate shrines, each dedicated to a different deity. The most popular shrine in the temple is the Mariamman shrine, which is festooned with colorful flowers and offerings from worshipers. The Sri Mariamman Temple is open to the public from 6:00am to 10:00pm daily.

Historical Significance

The signing of the treaty of Singapore on 6 February 1942 was a significant moment in Singapore's history as it marked the end of British rule and the start of Japanese occupation. The treaty was signed by Sir Shenton Thomas, the last British governor of Singapore, and Lieutenant-General Seishirō Itagaki, the Japanese commander in Singapore. Under the treaty, Singapore became a Japanese protectorate and all British troops and civilians were to be evacuated.
