History of Bardoli

The Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928 was an act of civil disobedience led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in the Indian state of Gujarat. The satyagraha (literally, "truth force") was a protest against the British-imposed salt tax. In February 1928, the British government in India imposed a salt tax on the Indian people. The tax was unpopular, and Gandhi saw the salt tax as a symbol of the British exploitation of the Indian people. In March, Gandhi led a march to the sea to collect salt in protest of the tax. The march was met with violence by the British authorities, and Gandhi was arrested. In response to Gandhi's arrest, the people of Gujarat launched a massive satyagraha campaign. The campaign was successful, and the British government was forced to repeal the salt tax. The Bardoli Satyagraha is considered to be one of Gandhi's most successful campaigns.
