Papanasanathar Temple
The Papanasanathar Temple is a Hindu temple located in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is dedicated to the god Shiva and is one of the six major Shiva temples of Tamil Nadu.
Legends Behind its Name
There are a few legends behind the naming of Tirunelveli. One legend says that the Pandyan king, Nedunchezhiyan, wanted to build a temple for Lord Shiva at this place. But, he was not able to do so as he was constantly disturbed by a she-demon, Thirumalai Naayaki. Lord Shiva then appeared in his dream and asked him to build the temple at the present location. The king then named the place after Lord Shiva's consort, Parvati - Tirunelveli. Another legend says that the area was once covered with forests. The Pandyan king, Nedunchezhiyan, chopped down the forests and built a temple for Lord Shiva. He then named the place after Lord Shiva's consort, Parvati - Tirunelveli.
