Tirunelveli is a city and a municipality in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the headquarters of the Tirunelveli district. It is located 633 km south of the state capital Chennai and 64 km north of Thoothukudi. Tirunelveli is the second largest city in the South Tamil Nadu region after Chennai. It is an ancient city with a long recorded history. The city is important archaeological center with many ancient temples and monuments. The city is located on the western bank of the Thamirabarani River. The river originates in the Anamalai Hills of the Western Ghats and flows eastward across the southern part of the state. It empties into the Gulf of Mannar. The river has a total length of 373 km and a drainage area of 10,652 km². The Tirunelveli district is situated in the valley of the river. The city is spread over an area of 147 km². The climate of Tirunelveli is tropical wet and dry. The summers are hot and humid with temperatures reaching up to 38 °C. The winters are mild with temperatures ranging from 18 to 28 °C. The monsoon season is from June to September. The city receives around 900 mm of rainfall annually. The economy of Tirunelveli is based on agriculture, industry, and services. The major crops grown in the district are rice, sugarcane, groundnut, cotton, and millet. The major industries in the district are textiles, chemicals, and cement. The major services sector industries are banking and insurance. The city is well connected to other parts of the state and the country by road and rail. The city has a bus station and a railway station.
