West Sikkim is a district of Sikkim state in northeastern India. The district headquarters is at Yuksom. West Sikkim district is bounded by Tibet to the north, by the Darjeeling district of West Bengal state to the west, by the East Sikkim district to the east, and by the districts of North Sikkim and South Sikkim to the south. The district has an area of 1,227 square kilometers. The district is divided into four administrative subdivisions: The district has a population of 108,032 according to the 2011 census. The majority of the population (88.5%) is Hindu. There are also significant numbers of Buddhists (8.8%) and Christians (1.3%). The main languages spoken in the district are Nepali (64.5%), Limbu (18.8%), and Lepcha (10.9%). The economy of the district is largely based on agriculture. The main crops grown are rice, maize, millet, and vegetables. The district has a number of tourist destinations, including the Yuksom and Pemayangtse monasteries, the Khecheopalri Lake, and the Tsongmo Lake.
