About Kerala kalamandalam Kalamandalam in Thrissur district of Kerala is an internationally acclaimed centre for learning and training in classical Indian dance, music and drama. It is also known for its exquisite traditional art forms and crafts. Kalamandalam was founded in 1930 by Vallathol Narayana Menon, a reputed Malayalam poet and social reformer, with the objective of preserving and promoting the traditional art forms of Kerala. It is located on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River, about 30 km from Thrissur city. Kalamandalam is an autonomous institution under the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in classical Indian dance, music and drama. The institution also conducts research and training programmes in traditional art forms and crafts. The students of Kalamandalam are known for their outstanding performances in classical Indian dance, music and drama. The institution has produced many eminent dancers, musicians and theatre artists.
