Midnapore district is bounded by the districts of Bankura to the north, Purulia to the west, West Medinipur to the south, and East Medinipur to the east. The district has an area of 4,545 km². The population of the district was 9,545,811 in the 2011 census. Midnapore district has a largely rural population. The main languages spoken in the district are Bengali and Hindi. The district is mainly agricultural. The main crops grown in the district are rice, jute, and sugarcane. The district has a number of tourist attractions. These include the ruins of the fort at Gopalpur, the temples of Tarapith and Bishnupur, and the wildlife sanctuaries at Midnapore and Salim Ali. Midnapore is connected to the rest of India by road and rail. The nearest airport is at Kolkata.
