The park was established in 1982 as the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, with an area of 834 square kilometres (322 sq mi). In 1988, it was declared a national park. The park is known for its alpine meadows, glaciers, and snow-capped peaks. It is home to a number of endangered species, including the snow leopard, the Himalayan brown bear, and the Asiatic black bear.
