About Palakkad Palakkad (Malayalam: เดชเดพเดฒเดเตเดเดพเดเต), also known as Palghat, is a city and municipality in the state of Kerala in southern India. It is the administrative headquarters of Palakkad district. Palakkad is located near the border with the state of Tamil Nadu. The city is situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats. Palakkad was known as Palghat, a name derived from the Malayalam words Pala (meaning forest) and Kattu (meaning fort). Palakkad is the gateway to the Nilgiri Hills, part of the Western Ghats mountain range. The city is home to several institutions of higher education, including the Kerala Agricultural University and the Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad. The Palakkad Town railway station is the busiest railway station in Kerala. The station is served by the Palakkad-Cochin Harbour section of the Southern Railway Zone of the Indian Railways. The climate is tropical wet and dry. The city is known for its production of rice, coffee, tea, rubber, and spices, including cardamom, pepper, and ginger.
