"The love of capital of India", Agra is located in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India, famed for its magnificent Mughal-era architecture.
 
The first mention of Agra is found in the epic Mahabharata. It was then known as Agrabana and was the capital of the kingdom of the Surasenas. In the 12th century, Sultan Muhammad of Ghor conquered the city and renamed it Qila-i-Akbarabad. He made it his capital and the centre of his empire. Later, in 1526, Emperor Babur captured the city and named it Agra and in 1803, it was captured by the British.
 
In 1947, Agra became part of the independent Republic of India. Since then, the city is a major tourist hub, with visitors coming to witness the seven wonders of the world the Taj Mahal and other historical sites.
