Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is a gravity dam on the Krishna River near Nalgonda in the Indian state of Telangana. It is the largest masonry dam in the world and the second largest dam in India. The primary purpose of the dam is irrigation and it also provides hydroelectric power. The dam was completed in 1960 and its original name was the Nalgonda Dam. It was renamed in honor of the Indian philosopher Nagarjuna in 1998.
