About Sigiriya

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka, surrounded by the jungle. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
The Sigiriya rock is an enormous isolated mass of columnar rock, rising to a height of 190 meters. It was created by the last of the series of volcanic eruptions that created the Knuckles mountain range. The summit of the rock is a nearly flat plateau, about 1.6 hectares in extent, ringed by a precipice nearly 200 meters high.

The name Sigiriya is derived from the Sanskrit word "siṅghārā" meaning "lion's rock". According to legend, the site was selected by Prince Siddhartha (the future Buddha) as the location of his palace, and was subsequently fortified by King Kasyapa (477 - 495 CE).
The site was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century, when it was abandoned. The Sigiriya rock was extensively quarried in the medieval period, leaving behind numerous Buddhist sculptures and paintings.
The Sigiriya rock is a major tourist attraction, with over 1 million visitors per year.
