Ajmer is one of the cities that holds an interesting historical background, which makes it one of the bucket lists on your travel wish list. Surrounded by the mighty Aravalli hills, Ajmer is a must-visit if you are an adventure seeker and, above all, a history buff.

The history of Ajmer is intertwined with the history of the Rajputs. The city was founded in the late 7th century AD by Ajayraj, the son of the Rajput king Ajaipal. Ajmer was the capital of the Chauhan dynasty until the 13th century, when the capital was moved to Delhi. Later, in 1556, the Mughal emperor Akbar conquered Ajmer. The city remained under Mughal control until 1707, when it was taken over by the Marathas. In 1818, the British briefly occupied Ajmer before returning it to the Marathas. The British finally annexed the city in 1818.

Ajmer is now a popular pilgrimage site for Muslims who believe the remains of the Prophet Mohammed are housed in the tomb of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. The annual Urs festival, which draws a large number of pilgrims and tourists, is also held in the city.
