Going back to history, West Bengal dates back to the 6th century BC, when the region was inhabited by the Banga people. The region was part of the Maurya Empire during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. In the 1st century BC, it was conquered by the emperor Ashoka. The region was later ruled by the Gupta Empire, the Pala Empire, and the Sena dynasty. The region was invaded by Muslim armies in the 12th century, and was later ruled by the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire. It was eventually annexed by the British East India Company in 1765. The region became an Indian state in 1947, after Indian independence.

If you are aware of the well-known Terracotta architecture and are fond of it, then you must visit Bishnupur. Located on the banks of the Jamuna River and a distance of 134 km from Kolkata, the city is glorified with its unique taste in architecture, culture, and music that is a treat for the eyes at every stop. The town is also famous for its handicrafts, and the most famous of these are the Bishnupur dolls, made of terracotta.

To give a little overview, Bishnupur is a town and municipality in Bankura district in West Bengal. The town was founded in the seventeenth century by Malla kings who ruled over a large area in what is now Bankura district and Paschim Medinipur district. The Malla kings were devotees of the god Vishnu, and the town was named after him. The temples were built at the behest of the kings, and the artisans who created the temples were considered the best in the region.

One of the interesting facts apart from the architecture here is that the temples are clustered in the area around the palace of the Malla kings. The most famous of these temples is the terracotta temple dedicated to the god Raghunath. The temple was built in the seventeenth century and is decorated with terracotta carvings. The other famous temples are the ones dedicated to the gods Madanmohan, Radhamohan, Jagannath, and Shyamaladevi.
The climate of Bishnupur is tropical, so one must visit in the winter season to enjoy every bit of it.
