About Mahabalipuram beach Mahabalipuram is an ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Kancheepuram district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located 60 kilometres south of the city of Chennai, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. Mahabalipuram was built by the Pallava dynasty in the 7th century AD. It has a number of carved stone temples, most of which were carved out of the granite bedrock. The city has been abandoned after the 14th century and is now in ruins. Mahabalipuram is a popular tourist destination and is home to a large number of cave temples.
