Malappuram is a town and municipality in the Malappuram district of the Indian state of Kerala. It is situated in the Kozhikode division of Malappuram district. Malappuram is situated 50 kilometres northeast of Kozhikode, on the Kozhikode-Malappuram-Bangalore National Highway 213. The town is bordered by Tirur to the south, Kondotty to the east, Perinthalmanna to the north, and Manjeri to the west. Malappuram is an important trading center of spices and handicrafts. The town is also an important center of Muslim pilgrimage. The town has a large number of mosques, including the Juma Masjid, the largest and most important mosque in Malappuram. Malappuram is the headquarters of the Malappuram district. The district administration is headquartered in the Malappuram Collectorate building. Malappuram is an important center for education in Kerala. The Malappuram Central Library is the largest library in the district. The town has a large number of schools and colleges, including the Malappuram K.M.A. College, the Malappuram Muslim Orphanage College, and the Government Brennen College. Malappuram is well connected to other parts of Kerala by road and rail. The Malappuram town railway station is the headquarters of the Malappuram railway division. The town is connected to Kozhikode, Ernakulam, and other parts of Kerala by rail. The Malappuram-Tirur railway line, which was commissioned in 2006, provides a rail link between Malappuram and Tirur. The Malappuram-Manjeri railway line, which was commissioned in 2010, provides a rail link between Malappuram and Manjeri.
