The Pandyan Dynasty ruled the region for about two centuries, from the 13th to the 16th centuries CE. From the 16th to the 17th centuries CE, the region was briefly ruled by the Vijayanagara Empire. From the 18th century CE to the 20th century CE, the region was ruled by the Mysore Kingdom. Madras, which became Tamil Nadu in 1969, was established in 1950.

Enjoy the history of Madurai View Gallery - 6
Located on the banks of the Vaigai River, Madurai is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities and the second largest city in Tamil Nadu.

The city was known as "Koodal" in Sangam literature and served as the capital of the Pandyan Dynasty. The city is home to a number of historic temples, including the Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of India's most prominent Hindu temples. Various dynasties ruled Madurai, including the Pandyas, Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Mysore Kingdom, and British. The city was frequently exchanged between Tamil and British forces. One of the most striking aspects of Madurai is the intricate architecture of numerous temples and the literature. Madurai hosts the 12-day Chithirai Festival, a one-of-a-kind 12-day festival that features an ethereal wedding of idols and can be considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
