About Periyar national park Idukki Periyar National Park is a national park in the Indian state of Kerala. The park is located in the Idukki district and is contiguous with the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The park was established in 1978 as the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. In 1985, it was renamed as the Idukki Periyar National Park. Idukki Periyar National Park is spread over an area of . The park is divided into the Core Area and the Buffer Area. The Core Area is located in the high ranges of the Western Ghats and is spread over an area of . The Buffer Area is located in the low ranges of the Western Ghats and is spread over an area of . The park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The park is a major tiger reserve in India. Other mammals found in the park include leopards, elephants, gaur, sambar deer, barking deer, mouse deer, and wild boar. The park is also home to a wide variety of birds, including the great hornbill, Malabar pied hornbill, Ceylon frogmouth, and Oriental darter. Idukki Periyar National Park is open to the public from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The park can be accessed from the towns of Kumily and Kottayam.
