About Kumbakonam Kumbakonam is a town in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is located around 205 km south of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Kumbakonam is known as the "City of Temples" and is one of the most important religious centres in South India. The town is located on the banks of the river Kaveri. The Kumbakonam area is mentioned in the Tamil Sangam literature. The town was the capital of the Chola kingdom from the 9th century until the 13th century. The town was ruled by a succession of Chola, Pandya, Vijayanagara, Madurai Nayak, Thanjavur Maratha and British Raj rulers. Kumbakonam is a part of the Kumbakonam taluk. The town is an important centre for Hindu pilgrimage and is home to a large number of temples, including the Sarangapani Temple, the Nageshvara Temple, the Ekambareswarar Temple, the Kamakshi Amman Temple, the Kailasanathar Temple, the Govindaraja Temple and the Venkateshwara Temple. The town is also home to the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, the Pancha bootha Lingams and the Nataraja Temple. The economy of the town is based on tourism and agriculture. The town is known for its handloom textiles and handicrafts.
