It is one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of India. Rudra Prayag is located at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers in the Himalayas. The town is situated at an altitude of 1,457 metres (4,780 feet) and is well connected by road to other major towns in the region. The nearest airport is at Jolly Grant, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) away. Rudra Prayag is a small town and does not have any major tourist attractions. However, the town is situated at the confluence of the two most sacred rivers in Hinduism, the Ganges and the Yamuna, and is therefore considered a holy place. The town is also close to the Hindu pilgrimage site of Badrinath, and is a popular stopover for pilgrims travelling to or from the site.
