Statue of Unity is the world’s tallest statue. It is dedicated to the memory of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was the first Home Minister of independent India. The statue is 182 metres tall, which is almost twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in the United States. It is also the world’s tallest statue made of bronze.
The idea for the statue was first proposed in 2010 by the then Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi. Construction began in October 2013 and was completed in October 2018. The statue was inaugurated on 31 October 2018, the 143rd anniversary of Patel’s birth.
The statue is made up of 7,000 tonnes of iron and bronze. It has been built at a cost of Rs. 2,989 crore. The statue is surrounded by a 12-hectare garden. There is a museum and a research centre within the area.
The Statue of Unity is a symbol of national pride for India. It is a tribute to the great Sardar Patel, who played a key role in the country’s freedom struggle and in the formation of the modern Indian state.
